Dera Ghazi Khan, a regional headquarters in the Punjab province, is situated on the right side of river Indus about 450 km south west of Lahore. The city lies only 16 km away from the right bank of the river. D.G. Khan represents the best part of the Indus right bank extending from Sehwan in Dadu district to Chashma in D.I. Khan District. All normal soils of the area can produce high yields of common crops under modern agricultural management.
D.G. Khan District is the only district of the Punjab, whose administrative boundary touches the rest of the three provinces of Pakistan. The district is of elongated shape and lies between latitudes 28.30o to 31.15o north and longitude 69.31o to 70.50o east. The climate of the area is very arid, and the annual rainfall is low, ranging from 100 to 180 mm (135 mm in D.G. Khan proper). About 50% of total rainfall is received during the monsoon in the months of July and August. Because of low humidity, the area represents one of the hottest places of the country. Mean maximum temperature is 42oC (during May to July) and mean minimum temperature is 3oC (during January).
